A Latex Foam Mattress Topper for a Simmons NxG.

Hi Pete,
I've been reading through your blogs and information on your site - many thanks for providing this to the public and your customers.
I'd like to request your help on how we can best improve our sleep, comfort, and hopefully resolve our mattress problems and mornings waking with pain.  Approx. 1.5 years ago we purchased a Simmons Beautyrest NXG (I can't recall offhand the exact #, but believe it's one of the "plush" versions).  Yes, it felt great in the showroom and we fell for the misinformation of all the "next gen technology" and memory foam...well, BS.  It did feel good for maybe the first 6 months, after which the memory foam obviously and visible lost it's density and loft to where we started sinking into it vs. being supported.  The nights became tossing & turning to get comfortable, and waking with upper and middle back pain (my wife) and lower back and shoulder pain (me).  We are both back / side sleepers.  I later purchased a 2" memory foam topper from Serta that was supposed to be high quality and would last better than most; however, it proved the same story - helpful at first, but within 6 months we're back with the restless nights and painful mornings.
Last week we went on vacation and slept on a standard innerspring mattress.  It seemed relatively firm, but we both slept well and woke without pain.  We're now looking to replace the memory foam topper with a latex one.  What we're unsure of is which size (2" or 3") and firmness (soft, medium, firm) would be best for us and our situation.  I initially thought of going for a 3" firm, but after reading some of your information it sounds as that may be overcompensation.  Note that we feel our mattress is significantly too soft and non-supportive.  I am also not sure if the NXG can be flipped.
Hoping you can advise on the best solution to our problem so we can finally have the sleep we want and need!  Looking forward to your insight.
Thanks, Nate

Hi Nate,
Memory foam is terrible when it comes to support...as it quickly loses what little support it has.
Adding a latex topper will not compensate for the lack of support offered by your mattress.
Your options are: flip the mattress over and add 2" of soft latex....or, get rid of that mattress and get one where there is good support.
A topper, you buy for surface comfort. The mattress is supposed to provide the support. Since yours isn't doing that, you don't have the basis for a good night's sleep.
