For a Large Man, a mattress that will wear well.

Hi Pete:
I was going through your blog tonight and ran across the letter below.
My husband and I do not have any where close to the physical challenges the letter writer and her husband do, but due to my husband’s size I wondered if your answer might apply to us.
I am 58 years-old and weigh 135, but my husband weighs 273. He does have a bad back and has trouble getting/staying comfortable.
In 2011 we bought a Stearns & Foster all latex mattress which developed a 1.75” body impression after about 15 months. S&F did honor their warranty so we exchanged it for a Heidi Luxury Firm mattress and added a 2” talalay latex topper. This mattress also developed a deep body impression after only 6 months.
I was reading about your Therepedic Medi-Coil 2-sided mattress and wondered if it could be a solution for us. I would like to get a split king this time, (which I guess amounts to 2 Twin XL’s), to maybe use with an adjustable bed base.
My question is: do you think this is a good decision for us? Should be get the Firm or Plush model? Would we need to add latex topper(s) to both? You tell the lady in the letter below to get the plush and add a talalay and Dunlop topper, but they do not weigh as much as my husband. We also use an adjustable base. Will the Medi-Coil work on that type of base? What is the warranty on this mattress and is it prorated or not?
We are at the end of our rope and would greatly appreciate your help.
Thank you so much.
Vicki

Hi Vicki,
The advice to Bonnie, (Click Here to View), will work for you, and for all the same reasons.
Besides the Medi-Coil model, the Cameo model will also work at the reduced weight of 273....that's if you are buying this as a flat mattress.
These Two-sided Therapedic models will not work with an adjustable bed.
Also a good choice and one that will work on an adjustable bed base, is the Simmons Beautyrest Black Alexia will work for you too. Shown here.

I would recommend a 2" soft Talalay latex topper as being all you need.

If you are going with an adjustable bed, this model from Simmons is a good choice. http://themattressexpert.com/adjustable-bed/

As a final word of caution, a mattress on an adjustable bed base will wear quickly at the point where it bends, as all of your body weight shifts to that point when the head is raised.
