Buying a New Mattress. Where to Start?

Tom writes:

Hi Pete,
I stumbled on your blog while checking out prices on your website.
My wife and I are starting to look for a new mattress ours is close to 20yrs old and sleeps poorly to say the least.

We are looking at a King mattress which is an upgrade from our queen, and do not know where to start.
With the different price ranges, types (foam, latex, coil#) I was hoping you can give us a couple of suggestions.
We don't want to break the bank, but want something that will hold up over time.
I'm not particular to any brand, but would like something in the plush/firm category.
Also my wife tends to sleep hot, so anything that will help with that would be a plus too.
Also is it worth looking any of the two sided mattresses to get more longevity?
Thanks. Tom

Hi Tom,
We really do need to start with your expectations....what you think you're getting.
20 Years ago, you went out and bought a mattress and expected it to last 10 years. You stretched yours to twenty. (suffered some for that too, I'd wager).
Anyhow, it's not that easy today. They all went one-sided about 10 years ago and the shift in manufacturing went from what was good to what will sell. "Soft" sells. It isn't any good for you, your body or your wallet, but it keeps right on selling.
It's important that you not be seduced by these kinds of beds. And make no mistake, it is the seductive nature of these mattresses that continually makes the sale. Oddly enough, many people don't learn. It's like how it is when someone is drawn to flames...such a beautiful light it makes. You walk up to it, feel the heat and reach in and get burned. Most people would agree that if you do that more than once, you qualify as in idiot. Yet, perfectly sane and reasonably intelligent people will buy into the luxury of today's mattresses again and again with the assurance from the salesman that it will last. Kinda like having someone assure you that the fire won't burn you this time, so go ahead, stick your hand in it. It's ok. It won't burn you now.
That all may sound ridiculous to you. But, it happens all the time. 20 years out, you can easily be classified as a mattress virgin. When it comes to mattresses, it's a whole different world than the one you knew.
Ok, so where do you start? How do you avoid the hazards?
You could go with one of our two sided mattresses. I, personally, went through a lot to have those made. They are very high quality innerspring mattresses. The caveat to them is that they must be flipped on a regular basis to get the most from them. You have to be willing and able to take care of them.
Most people don't want to be bothered flipping a mattress and can't understand why there's a body impression showing after only a few months...Maybe the next one will be better...Maybe the fire won't burn me next time.
Back to basics is the answer. Throwing a lot of money at it is not the answer. The worst offenders are top line mattresses, which are way past the point of diminishing return.
Since the 1920s, the upholstery product that has been and remains "king", is latex foam rubber.
You can buy an all latex mattress. And while very good, they are very expensive....but frankly, no more expensive than what some people are willing to spend on that junk,
called memory foam.
Nobody's missing that trick either. Go shopping for a latex mattress and you are likely to end up with what the industry calls, a latex hybrid. That would be a couple/few inches of latex atop a block of polyurethane foam. Of course, you wouldn't know that because the salesman neglected to include that information in his sales pitch.
It's bad out there, Tom. Kinda like it used to be when buying a used car...only much worse. It's more like the Wild West when there were no laws to protect you. In fact, it's just like that.
Your question came at the end of my work day and I am rambling, as I want to do from time to time. It's just that it's been so long for you, I suspect you'll get skinned alive. Salespeople have a sense about these things. They can smell the innocence on you and take full advantage of it.
Simple physics tells you that firm is more durable than soft.
If you can afford an all latex mattress, it is in fact, your best long term investment. If you are like most people in this economic climate, an all latex mattress is, simply, not in the budget.
Latex, however, is still the saving grace for mattress buyers. A good quality, reasonably firm innerspring mattress is fairly inexpensive. Add to that, 2" of soft all-natural Talalay Latex and you have a sleep system that feels like you spent thousands of dollars. What more, it will last a long time...as if you bought it 20 years ago.
The combination of a firm mattress with a soft latex topper provides the firm support needed for your spine and the comfort at the surface for muscular relaxation and pressure point relief at the hips and shoulders. Together, it's a deep night's sleep that repeats itself night after night for many years....something that is denied you by most of the mattresses on the market.
I'm including some links for you to check out on our website. The 1st is our "Brands" page, where you will find all of our mattresses, including the 3 Latex lines we carry...along with the
two-sided flippable mattresses I mentioned. The others will be our most popular innersprings with latex topper sleep systems.
