A Two-Sided Mattress like my old Stearns & Foster.

Hi Pete,
I wish I had found you before I wasted my money.
In 2001, we bought a Stearns & Foster mattress. It was a plus without a pillowtop. I forget the model name, but it started with an H.
We loved that mattress. It was firm inside and soft outside and we could flip it.
We live in So. California. There's a retailer here that advertises that you should replace your mattress if it's more than 8 years old. He does a good job of scaring you into believing that.
Foolishly, we followed his advice. We went to that store last November, one of those big chain stores, and ended up with a pillowtop mattress, (at my wife's insistence).
It seemed very comfortable in the showroom and when we first got it. A month later, it had body impressions and I was waking up in pain....something that had never happened with out old S&F mattress. In January, they replaced the mattress with a firmer model that wasn't a pillowtop, Which I insisted on after having read your posts about how pillowtops wear so easily.
So here we are, barely 6 months later, and this mattress also has nice deep body imprints.
Granted, we are not light weight people. But still, after what we had experienced in the past with our old S&F mattress, and the one that preceded it, we never expected to encounter mattresses that are, frankly, pieces of crap. I want my old mattress back...or something like it.
I've been referring to your blog for information and help since January. I know you have something for me. I just need to know which mattress is most like my old S&F.
Once we get that from you, this one is going in the garbage...where it belongs.
Thanks so much, Joe

Hi Joe,
That's a sad story...one I hear time and time again.
I've seen those commercials and know exactly which retailer you are referring to. I've been to one of his stores. I was greeted by an older gentleman, very nice, who showed me around and was generous with his information...telling me all about this mattress and that mattress. If I didn't know any better, he sounded like a very knowledgeable sales person. If I were a regular consumer, I would have bought from him. However, I do know better and I was amazed that almost everything he told me was incorrect information...sounded like he was just making it all up as he went along. It was all BS. But, it was believable BS.

It wasn't long after you bought that H level S&F, that things changed dramatically. Mattresses went one sided, the manufacturers began using more and more memory foam, which along with all of the pillowtops, turned the mattress industry from a legitimate business into one controlled by so many whores and pirates...making mattresses that don't hold up worth a damn...making them disposable, like so many other products you buy these days. What happened to you, happens to many other trusting souls who placed that trust into the wrong hands.
You are correct. I do have a mattress that is very similarly made to your old S&F mattress. Actually, it's better made. Our Therapedic Medi-Coil Ultimate Permatuft Plush uses the same coil unit that was in your old S&F mattress. The poly foam is higher density and it's softened with latex foam rubber...the most durable upholstery material available on the planet. And, to top it all off,
this two-sided, flippable mattress is fully tufted for even greater stability. It's specifically designed to hold the weight of heavy people and remain like new for many many years.
We've had this mattress on the market for past 5 years, with our heaviest customers topping 500 pounds....and with zero complaints.
We've had two such customers by that bed...both from Texas. I guess it's true what they say..."Everything is bigger in Texas".
Here is the link to that mattress. White Glove Delivery is free and there's no sales tax.

Concerning the advertisement that started all of this, I find that individuals that resort to exaggerated scare tactics to drum up business to be despicable.
So, let me school you as to what's what, concerning those scare tactics.
1) Dust Mites.
When mattresses were made of natural materials, like the cotton batting they used to use, dust mites would get into the mattress and breed. Over time, the mattresses would get heavier because of that, (Leaving out all the gross details...you're welcome).
Today's mattresses are made of synthetic materials and are a hostile environment for dust mites. And while the do collect on the surface of the mattress, they don't breed inside.
Dust mites feed off of dead skin cells, which you shed plenty of every night. To keep the dust mite population to a minimum, vacuum the surface of your mattress when you strip the bed to launder the linens.
2) Perspiration.
If you don't protect your mattress, your perspiration will seep into the mattress and break down the upholstery materials.
The solution is to use a waterproof mattress protector. A "duh" type of simple solution.
3) Dead Skin.
Your body sheds an awful lots of dead skin cells as you sleep. Again, the mattress protector will keep those skin cells from getting anywhere near the mattress.

Over the past 10 years, since mattresses went one sided, their over-all quality has steadily reduced. If your mattress is anywhere between 4 and 8 years old,
it could very well need replacing...although, not for the reasons in that ad....but just because it's likely to be a lousy mattress and no longer provides adequate support and comfort.
If, however, your mattress is older when they were made better, replacing your well made mattress with the junk that's made today will likely be as big a mistake for you as it was for Joe and countless other like him. Quite often, a much older mattress is simply firmer than an aging body finds comfortable...but is still providing excellent support.
In many of these cases, all you need is to soften the surface. All-Natural Latex foam rubber will do that job better than anything else and do it for many more years to comes.
Compared to the price of a new mattress, the small cost of a latex foam topper is the best money you can spend.
Avoiding the aggravation experienced by Joe and those many others who did what he did...priceless.
