Mattress coil counts. What matters?‏

Coil count? is this important and what is a satisfactory amount for a queen size. Tempered coils or not? Do they really help with sagging? And when you talk levels what does that mean?
Thanks, John

Hi John,
Sagging rarely happens because of the coils. It's the standard padding, poly and memory foams, that create the body impressions.
When it comes to coil count, you have to first understand that a mattress has an area. Only so many coils will fit into this are. Fewer of the larger coils will fit into the same area as many more smaller coils. One of the original coil units, from the 1920s, was the Bonnell coil...a large heavy coil, which maxes out at 418 coils in queen. Even though the count is much less than other units, this coil system has always been the most durable...like in these two sided Therapedic Medi-Coil models shown here, which is designed to hold very heavy people:

The next important coil system is the Individually pocketed coils of the Simmons Beautyrest. The Classic Series has 800, the World Class has 900 and the Black, also, has 900 with half of them made of 3 wires twisted together...a cable coil. The steel used hi high grade, high carbon steel. It is not tempered, and doesn't need to be. They are 9" tall coils compressed into a 7" tall pocket. There are many other brands using a pocketed coil design. The steal is usually double tempered, but is a much lower grade of steel to begin with. Also, those coils are not compressed...the coils and pockets are the same height.
Most importantly, is the gauge of steel being used. A plush Simmons Beautyrest uses a 15.5 gauge wire, which is very thin and doesn't keep its shape very well. It's such a problem for anyone buying them, that we have eliminated them from our website. Here is a link to the Simmons Beautyrests on our website.

The other important coil unit is that which has been used in the Sealy Posturepedic for the last 25 years. It's a smaller, more numerous version of the original Bonnell. Sealy called it Posturetech, but that is trade mark name for Sealy alone. In 2011, Sealy greatly reduced the number of coils used in their beds and alloyed the steel with titanium. Now, that may sound impressive, but you have to understand that very little titanium is used...AND, titanium's true value is in maintaining strength under high heat...not really of any value in this application. The two-sided Cameo models have a 700 coil count in queen and the steel is double tempered...as it needs to be.

So you see, John, there's a whole lot more to it than just the number of coils.
You must also be weary of the gimmick mattresses that use half coils, one atop the other, doubling the coil count. But two half coils, one teetering atop the other, is not as strong and not as stable as a single full length coil.

Thanks, Pete
