Too Soft High End Mattress Causing Back Pain

Diane writes:

Peter,
I wished I had discovered this website sooner. It seems to be
very helpful.
My husband and I purchased a very high dollar
($3000 queen set) S&F Silver Edition Euro Pillow Top Mattress and low profile
box spring at a large chain store in OKC, OK.
We had an old Sealy Posterpedic
that we were replacing. I am 49, 135 lbs, my husband is 54 and 180 lbs.
He has shoulder pain, I have arthritis in neck and upper back and
bulging disk in lower back. In the store, this S&F Silver Ed felt
incredible. We laid on it for about 15 minutes in various positions. I
spent well over 2 hours in the store trying out every model they had.
Now, at home, we have noticed several things. First, when we are both in
bed we seem to fall to the middle. We added some extra slats to the bed
frame because we noticed the lo-profile box spring that came with the
mattress was sinking underneath. (Now there are 10 slats total). We have
also noticed when we turn in bed the box spring makes noise. My back
pain seems to be worse at times.
We can exchange it one time and can only go UP in price. If we do
find something less expensive we lose the difference. I want to make
sure we get the right mattress/box spring this time.
We will ultimately be buying a second set of
mattresses for a cabin we are building in Colorado so I would like to
get this "mattress business" figured out.
Thank you so much for your
help and advice. Diane

Hi Diane,
You went for luxury and are now paying the price. The mattress industry is geared to selling you the most expensive, most luxurious mattress they can....because that's where the money is.
No one at those big chain stores is trained to offer advice as to what would be good for you. They play on the accepted concept that if it cost's more, it must be better.
Now, you're stuck with an exchange from them and nowhere to go but up in price.
The only mattresses worth $3000 would be all latex mattresses. If they offer those, get that. Be sure that it isn't too soft. A too soft mattress will worsen any back problems you have.
Make sure your bed frame has a center support that has a leg to the floor. Slats alone will bow...and the boxspring & mattress will bow also.
I hear people tell me that they can't buy a mattress without trying it first. This is a good example as to why that isn't a good idea anymore....the result of neither you nor your salesperson knowing what's what.
Here's a link to our latex mattress brands. Peruse them to get an idea of what they cost.
