A Soft Talalay Latex Topper to Canada

Jessica writes:
Hi Pete,
My husband and I are both 29, and using the same mattress I took with me at 18 when I moved out of my parents' house...and at that time, the mattress was probably already at least 10 years old. <wince>
So as you can see, it's way past the suitable time for us to buy a new mattress. We have absolutely no idea what we're doing. Any time we've visited a mattress store, we feel too overwhelmed and pressured to make a good decision. We love plush hotel beds and the only thing I've really read about how to get a hotel bed is on Gwyneth Paltrow's "Goop" blog (naive, I know).
We don't have a ton of money to spend and would probably buy things piece-by-piece as we could afford them, so we thought we'd first start with a mattress topper and a good duvet...whatever we can do do make our sleep more comfortable before we splurge on a mattress. We've read that goose down mattress toppers are good and used by many 5-star hotels, but this seems odd to me. Can you provide some insight? We both have allergies so want to make sure our bedding is safe.
We have a queen mattress without a box spring - it sits on a low profile bed frame with wooden slats underneath. Most of the mattress stores look at us funny when we say we only need a mattress and not the box spring. Is this a bad thing?
Also, we recently moved to Canada from the US and we're wondering if this is going to affect our choices much. Our current mattress is hard as a rock and neither of us is sleeping well....when we were younger and more resilient, I suppose it didn't matter to our joints and backs. But we're starting to wake up with aches literally all over our bodies. We love the feeling of sinking into a hotel bed and being wrapped up cozily in the many layers of toppers, soft sheets, blankets, and duvets. Any advice you could offer as we venture on this journey would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Jessica

Hi Jessica,
You're in luck. Older mattresses were made a whole lot better than mattresses today. If all that is wrong with yours, is that it's too firm, you can solve that problem easily and inexpensively, with a couple of inches of soft Talalay Latex...very comfy.
The first thing to get is a latex topper. 2" of soft Talalay Latex will make a big difference. Latex is the most comfortable and resilient material available and will last you for many years....and, you may very well find that adding one to the mattress you have will put off needing to replace it for a number of years.
When you finally pull the trigger for a new mattress, the latex topper will still be useful to you.
The problem with down comforters is that they need continual fluffing...something the hotel's housekeeping staff does.
The latex toppers require no maintenance, which is why you want that as your first layer.
There are a couple of latex toppers available...one with a cuddly wool top. Here is the link to those toppers.
UPS delivery to all Canadian Provinces is free...and we do not charge your sales tax.
