Cooling off a mattress that sleeps hot

George writes:

I recently purchased a pillow top bed. I get too hot, and so does my wife. The retailer suggested we try 100 % cotton sheets a lighter duvet and cooling the bedroom off before we go to bed. We did and its still too hot for a good solid sleep. My question is are mattress toppers designed to cool the bed any good? do they work eg:

Hi George,
All this talk about sleeping cool, is a side industry stemming from the abundant use of memory foam. I'd be willing to bet that your mattress has some memory foam in it. A soft pillowtop mattresses that you sink into, also help to trap your body heat. I have no knowledge about the products associated with the links you sent. I can tell you that the product being pushed to mitigate the heat of memory foam, is gel. Gel works, but not long enough. The cooling effect of the gel is short lived...only working for 2 to 4 hours, before the heat returns. The best way to insulate yourself from the heat of memory foam, is with a layer of latex. For this purpose, you will only need the thinner, 1.5" models. Here is a link to the latex toppers.
