Replacing a Simmons Beautyrest Pillowtop Mattress

Ana writes:

Good afternoon,
My husband and I are looking to replace our Simmons mattress and would like some advice.
I have been having a neck/shoulder pain (muscle nots, pinched nerve) for a couple of years now and think the mattress can be contributing to that. I'm 5'2" 127lbs and my husband is 6' 200 lbs.
Can you please give us a suggestion on which mattress to get (king size).
Thank you, Ana

Hi Ana,
You have a World Class Pillowtop Beautyrest.
Pillowtops lose their shape and resiliency quickly, causing you to sleep with your skeletal system out of its proper alignment....hence, the pinched nerves. The muscle knots come from compensating for that.
So this time, no pillowtop.
You need what everyone else needs...firm support with a comfortable sleeping surface.
Now, I know that's what you thought you were buying with the last one. Walk into any mattress store and you will see that most of the floor samples have pillowtops....and the sales person will promise you that they provide firm support with a comfortable sleeping surface.
I know...and now, you know...that is not what you'll get.
It isn't enough for a big ticket item, like a mattress, to work for only a short time.
An upholstered product, like a mattress or a sofa, is an ever changing thing...as opposed to a wooden chair, for instance. You must remember this when trying them and projecting their usable life. Only a light weight with no damage to their body, can tolerate a pillowtop for long. And even for them, it's a poor long term value.
Your husband is too big for one and you have physical damage that makes you sensitive to the normal changes a mattress goes through over it's life.
Over the past 10 years, or so, with mattresses going one sided and the prevalent use of memory foam and pillowtops...good, only for "making the sale"...it's become impossible to get your money's worth out of a mattress alone.
As a consumer, you have been put in a position where you have to find a way around this lack of quality.
Getting back to basics is a good way to solve many problems, and it certainly applies here.
Starting with what has always been top quality, latex is what you look to for the long lasting comfort you want. A 2" layer of soft Talalay latex feels great and allows for a greater depth of sleep....relieving pressure points and blood flow, and relaxing the muscles.
Add this latex to a good, strong, well made mattress with no pillowtop, and you'll end up with what you want that will last you long enough to get your money's worth.
Here are links to the combination that has worked well for many. As an extra bonus, the World CLass Simmons Beautyrest models will be on sale from 2/7 thru 2/20...paying for the mattress only and getting the boxspring free. I suggest going with the Annapolis Place in luxury firm.
