A Mattress w/ Motion Transfer Reduction, husband with Periodic Limb Movement Disorder

Terry writes:

My husband has PLMD (Periodic Limb Movement Disorder). He has rhythmic & repetitive movements (kicking legs and raising arms) every 10 to 20 seconds until he is in REM sleep which normally takes 4 to 5 hours. Some doctors believe it is a problem with nerve signals traveling from brain to the limbs. The brain is sending signals to the limbs to jerk awake, something similar to when you jerk awake from the falling feeling. Medication is an option but the side effects are severe and not worth it. He never wakes up, however I never get to fall asleep until he stops and the bed stops moving. I have been known to kick him back before I realized what it was, unfortunately that did wake him up and he wasn't too happy! I need something with as little motion transfer as possible. I have read your recomendations for the S&F individually pocketed coils and latex. I feel that would help but not enough so I am thinking I want to put 2 singles in a king frame. We have a king now, I am 5'6" and 135 lbs, he is 5'11" and about 260 lbs. What are your recomendations for this? Will they fit in a king frame? Will they stay together? What about the space in between? The best bed frame brand or kind? And what brand and kind of box springs and mattress?
Your help would be greatly appreciated, I can't function on only 3 or 4 hours of sleep a night much longer.

Hi Terry,
There are varying degrees of motion transfer reduction.
Simmons use an individually pocketed coil system. However, there is a difference that make the Simmons more effective at reducing motion transfer, than other brands with individually pocketed coils, like Serta and Stearns & Foster.
The pockets are heat sealed to one another in both units. In the Simmons, the point at which the pockets are attached is closer to the center, and closer to the top in the Serta and Stearns & Foster.
The motion reduction in the Simmons is quite a bit better.
A latex topper, also, adds to the reduction in motion transfer, as well as adding comfort and longevity to the mattress. The extra longevity it provides, will be important too...given your husband's size. The extra comfort it provides will be important for your lighter frame, considering you will need a firmer mattress to support his weight.
The split king will help some. But, considering the huge cost difference, it wouldn't be worth it.

Another consideration is separate beds or separate rooms. People opt for this course of action for less dramatic reasons than yours.
For instance, mom and dad slept in separate rooms for the last ten years of dad's life...mom is still alive. Besides dad's snoring, they had a temperature difference. Dad was thin and was always cold and mom is heavy and is always hot.
Anyway, here is a link to the mattress and the topper. The Simmons Beautyrest Black Ansleigh luxury firm with a 2" soft Talalay latex topper.
