Stearns and Foster Delphia mattress....a big mistake

Carolyn writes:

Hello,
We just recently replaced our 10 year old mattress.  It had started to get body depressions the last year that were a bit uncomfortable.  We got a Stearns and Foster Delphia and it turned out to be a big mistake.  The bed is too soft for me (although my husband likes it) and body depressions formed after only one night.  We've now been sleeping on it for a week and half and they have gotten worse, with a harder, raised lump in the middle (we have king size).  In addition to be very uncomfortable, I have been waking up every morning with neck and back pain. So, this mattress is clearly not right for me.  I had tried it out in the store, though, and thought it was comfortable.  If this one is wrong, do you have any suggestions on something completely different that could be better?
Many thanks, Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,
Everything you've said tells you it's the wrong mattress for you.
You have to keep in mind that there has been a huge reduction in quality over the past 10 years. Given your prior experience, you are bound to be disappointed in anything you find comfortable today.
You don't say which Delphia model you chose. It's available in firm or plush...with or without a pillowtop. Certainly, the firmer models hold up better than the softer ones.
Just as certainly, the softer ones sell better, as they are initially more comfortable.
Pillowtops sell better than tight tops, but lose their shape more quickly.
10 years ago, this was easier. It was hard to buy a bad mattress. Today, it's hard to buy a good one. The ones that sell easier are on the floor. The ones that hold up better are not. I would suggest getting a firm model and add a 2" layer of soft latex for comfort that lasts.
