A good strong mattress for a large man that is soft enough for a small woman

Hello,
I would like to get some recommendations for a mattress to address the very different needs of my husband and myself. We have had a terribly difficult time finding a mattress that will work for his 6'3" frame (weighs about 245) and also for my 5'4" frame (I weigh 135 pounds). We finally settled on a "natural latex bed" with customized layers and his side having very firm layers. After trying various configurations, it is just not working out after a whole year. We are ready to get rid of the bed as there just doesn't seem to be enough support for him and even for me. We are thinking of purchasing an air mattress with dual controls or a very firm spring mattress. it is difficult to find the latter though that will work for both of us without paying a huge sum for a custom bed such as made through "Custom Comfort." I typically need a mattress that is firm, but not nearly as firm as my husband. On top of that, whereas there appear to be good products on the market, I'm not comfortable with the amount of toxins that are reportedly used in fire retardants, particularly as standards have become more stringent. It does not appear that there is anyway that companies have been able to get around saturating their product with chemicals unless it is a product that is advertised on the internet as all organic (and costing an arm and a leg). Any feedback and ideas are very welcome!
Thank you, Carol

Hi Carol,
You have to first understand that their is a tremendous amount of misinformation about mattresses. As a political minimalist, I am loathed to say that this is one industry that needs government regulation...not that government regulation fixes anything, but if only to make everyone aware of what a deceptive industry this truly is.
Believe it or not, there is a simple and reasonably priced solution to your problem.
But first, the fear factor. Since January 2007, all mattresses sold in the US must be flame retardant. Some have chosen to treat the outer fabric with boric acid...the same chemical used to kill roaches.
And I agree, that is very scary to me, as a consumer. However, many manufacturers are using a chemical free backing to the fabric, that is perfectly safe...until you set it on fire. At that point, the chemical make up of the mattress is the least of your worries.
What you should fear is the careless misrepresentation of products in the mattress industry. To be called "Organic" means very little. Petroleum is organic, and natural. Only a small percentage needs to be natural, for a manufacturer to be able to label it "Natural".
When fear is used to sell you something, you are dealing with, no less than, modern day carpetbaggers....people who exploit, through the use of fear, a situation for personal gain.

Now, back to your solution. The mattress needs to be firm enough to support a big man. It needs to be soft enough at the surface to relieve pressure points. It needs to be able to do both jobs and last a reasonable amount of time. The last, is the tricky part. There are no mattresses that do both jobs effectively for and suitable period of time. The industry has created a box. If you only operate inside the box,
you are buying a new mattress every couple of years...which is their intent.
So, you must think outside the box in order to get true value...support and comfort that lasts.
The most resilient material available is latex. I have a latex mattress at home, have for many years, and am not considering anything else. Most people find the feel and support of latex to be superior.
You experience with latex is with an off brand that promised individual support and comfort...and you ended up with neither. There are many off brand latex mattresses, using latex made in China. I don't know about the latex in your bed, but wouldn't be surprised to learn that some or all of it is Chinese made....where they cut corners during processing and produce and inferior product.
Even so, lets say that an all latex mattress isn't for you. Even high quality, US made Talalay latex isn't right for everyone.
So again, thinking outside the box, going with a good quality, firm innerspring mattress for support and durability...adding to that 2" of soft, all-natural, latex for comfort that lasts, you end up with an ensemble sleep system that works well...and isn't terribly expensive. Here are links to the most popular of mattress when used with a latex topper...and to the toppers, themselves.
