A comfortable mattress that will hold up to large plus size people

Dear Pete,
 I am 5'11'' woman that weighs 300 to 315 lbs. My husband is 5'10" and weighs 325 to 335 lbs. I have herniated disks and sciatica. He has bursitis in his shoulders. It has become impossible for us to sleep in a bed for more than 2 hours. He has resorted to sleeping in a wing chair with ottoman or sofa, and I sleep in a recliner.  The furniture is not holding up and we need to do something. I realize an extra-firm mattress with a latex topper in medium is what you recommended to others with similar circumstances. But what about adjustable beds? Is there any adjustable bed that would hold up under our weight? I believe we would need a split queen since our room is small and can't really fit a split king and I believe our combined weight would be too much for a regular queen.  I am willing to spend the money needed but am terrified of wasting it on something that doesn't work. We really would be stuck with whatever we buy since we won't be able to spend any more money.  Unfortunately, this fear has stopped us from moving forward with any purchase.  Your advise would be greatly appreciated.

 Hi Mary,
An adjustable bed will not work for you. It would be an expensive mistake.
For physical ailments, an adjustable bed is useful in slight adjustments to the head and/or foot only. It's main purpose is the luxury of reclining in bed.
The mattresses for them need to be more flexible, while what you need, needs to be more rigid. 
Also, when an adjustable bed is in the reclining position, your weight shifts to that point where the mattress bends. Even at average weight, the mattress will wear at that point first.
