Pros & Cons, King vs. Queen size mattress

Thanks much.  Very complete communication.  We like sleeping closer, but maybe a new king will help her sleep better and it will work out better..  Just hate to do another headboard and all the sheets etc....but I guess it might be worth it.  Interested in your thoughts or how important or how better it is going from queen to king is. John

Hi John,
A king can be a real disappointment if you just go along with the program, so to speak.
The king size bed was developed in the 1960s. They had already been making twin extra long, so making a one piece mattress to fit two twin extra long boxsprings was a natural and easy evolutionary step. This was at a time when mattresses were primarily filled with horse hair and cotton...and using a very large and heavy gauge wire coil. Mattresses, then, came in your choice of: firm, extra firm and super firm. There were NO plush mattresses. It worked well for a long time. It doesn't work well anymore. The coils are weaker and the padding is of much lower density.
The padding under you compresses easily. The middle of the mattress develops a hump up the center where no one sleeps. Part of the problem is the padding. Part of the problem is the two rigid edges of the boxsprings.
As I mentioned, we have a Simmons Black model at home. It's a king size. A king mattress is virtually square...not quite.
What we've done is turned the set a quarter turn with the boxsprings going side to side. The rigid edges of the boxspring now support the heaviest parts of our bodies, instead of separating us. It's a thick mattress and the 2" of latex adds to that. We use the 9" boxsprings with it and put the whole thing directly on the floor...no frame, no headboard...and is a good height off the floor. Although, if we wanted a headboard, we could screw it to the wall and it would look fine.
The end result, no hump up the center and an evenly wearing mattress.
We enjoy the closeness of the queens we sleep in when we travel. We also have a queen all latex mattress in the spare room, which we will use on occasion.
That's about as clear a picture as I can paint for you.
With the right mattress...one that reduces the pressure points of your body, you'll toss and turn less and the advantage/disadvantage of the king may not be necessary

Thanks, Pete
