A memory foam mattress

Low back pain, like firm mattress. Memory foam has great appeal, but
not sure yet. Price an issue! Interested in gel memory mattresses due
to lower heat retention claimed by manufacturers. Is this true, and
are they as durable? Who makes the best ones at reasonable(under $1000

Hi George,
Memory foam has great appeal if all you're hearing is the hype. Once you know all about memory foam, the appeal turns to dread.
Many of the 61 chemicals it takes to make memory foam are toxic and carcinogenic. If off gasses fumes that will make you sick, attacking your respiratory system.
Your bad back will worsen as the foam sinks from the warmth of your body. Memory foam sleeps hot. The gel helps to mitigate this, but it still sleeps warm. In a year's time, the support is gone and the bed is shot. However, there won't be a damn thing you can do about it. The foam returns to its original shape enough to never allow you to prevail in a warranty claim.
Still sound good to you, George. I hope not. Buying one a huge mistake....not only financially, but your health will suffer. What's worse is, you're likely to suffer along with it for the sake of the money you spent. It's poison. Avoid it.
