The density of memory foam in mattresses

Tim writes:

If a base foam in a memory foam mattress is 8 inches and it states it has a density of 2 pounds, how can they call this a high density foam. All the information I have seen states high density foam should be 5 to 6 pounds. So, my understanding would be that this foam is a cheap and non-durable. Can you please explain this to me? Tim

Hi Tim,
You're looking at this in black and white, with 5-6 pound being high-density and 2 pound being, obviously less.
As the years have gone by, they have used lower and lower quality material. So, if the best thy used to make goes from 6 to 4 to 3 to 2, as each becomes the best they use, IT becomes their high density product.
And THAT, is the mattress industry for you...always saving a buck where they can....making ever cheap and cheaper products and passing them off as quality.
The problem is, nobody is watching them. They pull this kind of crap all the time and operate with impunity.
I'm sure there will come a time when the consumers will find the voice to reject all this nonsense and say, "Hey, we aren't going to buy anymore of your crap!!"
God knows when that will be. The steady decline in mattress quality is coming up on the 20 year mark. At some point, someone with teeth will get involved. Every once in awhile, I get a letter like yours and hope that "this" person will be the one with the teeth. And Tim, I hope that someone is you.
