Peter, Among mattresses of the same level of quality, is there any difference in how much back-support a firm, cushioned-firm, plush, or pillowtop mattress will provide? For example, among the level-6 Stearns and Foster mattresses -- the Chateau Paris, Abbeville, Arles Abbey, and Strasbourg Park -- is the softer-topped Strasbourg, while luxurious to lie on, generally harder on the back? Is the firmer Chateau Paris generally easier on the back? Am I correct that firmer mattresses are generally harder on the hips and shoulders? I know these answers can vary somewhat based on specific ailments and body types, but what about for a 190-pound man and 130-pound woman with relatively common physical characteristics? Also, is the mattress depicted here the Arles Abbey by another name.
Thank you, Jeff
Hi Jeff.
That mattress is probably very close to the Arles Abbey. I didn't see any specs, so I couldn't directly compare them. Support comes from the coil unit and is exactly the same in all of those models. The difference is the amount and softness of the padding in each. Firm mattresses can aggravate pressure points for a side sleeper, but the firm in that level is well padded. Don't go too soft. You want just enough padding to be comfortable. You can always make a mattress softer, but you can't make it feel firmer.
