Hi Pete,
Do you have any evidence based information to share about natural latex mattress and the potential for developing a latex all are washed out during the production of the mattress. Having worked with nurses allergic to latex, I know that it was the exposure over time to latex in the work environment at a major university hospital that caused their allergy as they didn't have such allergy until a few years into their careers. I want to put my daughters on mattresses that will reduce my one daughter's asthma. I also am concerned about compacting of the NL mattress and want to avoid the petrochemicals used in the synthetic latex mattresses as well as flame retardants in standard mattresses. A seemingly straightforward purchase is more complex than anticipated and overwhelming.
Thank you in advance, Laurie
Hi Laurie,
The allergen in latex is protein. When made into a foam, the protein is removed during a 5 stage washing. Latex allergies are through direct contact with the skin. It is not an airborne allergy.
The latex is not something you would come in contact with, directly. There is the mattress fabric, your mattress pad and sheets. So, even if the allergen were still there, it would not affect you, as it would with the latex gloves uised in the medical industry. There is no getting around the flame guarding, as that is there by law. Most companies use a non-chemical backing to the fabric for this purpose.
Here is a link to Latex International's Talalay process, which includes the washing stage. http://www.latexinternational.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=53&Itemid=65
Latex International is the company making our Pure Bliss Mattresses. When you go to the webpage, you'll notice that the same models are available as "Natural" and "All-Natural". The "natural" is a 40% synthetic.
The "all-natural" is 100% Natural latex, and a bit more expensive. The latex toppers, we carry, originate from Latex International...and are made of 100% all natural latex.
You might consider the Pamper model in "Natural" and top it off with the all- natural topper. Here are links to both.
