What Mattress for Large People with Back Pain and Fibromyalgia?

Susan writes:

Hi Pete,

I’ve been reading your blog and feel confident that you can help us.
We are large people, almost 300 lbs. for my husband and a little more than 200 lbs. for me. He has a herniated disc that causes him pretty bad back pain.
I have an advanced case of fibromyalgia.
I need to sleep on a soft mattress. He needs a firm mattress.
We’ve tried a number of different mattresses, but none of them work very well and not for very long.
We can’t afford to continue to throw money at a problem that doesn’t get fixed.
What mattress would you recommend for us?
Desperately, Susan

Hi Susan,
There isn’t one mattress that will solve both problems on a long term basis.
Your answer lies in a combination of products to produce a sleep system that will.
First, start with a mattress that is strong enough to support your weights over many years…one that will provide the support necessary to relieve your husband’s back pain.
Second, soften the surface of that mattress enough to relieve your fibro pain.

Recommendations:
The Mattress:
Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattress in Luxury Firm.
This mattress uses an individually pocketed coil system that is designed to maintain the natural alignment of the spine, which will relieve his back pain while he’s sleeping. He’ll wake with less and less pain each day.
The idea is to take the stress off of his herniated disc. By not aggravating the problem while he’s in bed, it gives his back the opportunity to heal.

The coil count in this mattress is extremely high, higher that most by a couple of hundred coils in queen size…more in king size.
The upholstery material is natural latex and plant based polyurethane.
There are no chemicals to off gas, so you don’t have to worry about odors.

The Topper(s):
Start with a 3” Soft Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Mattress Topper.
Latex for Less has the lowest prices on the highest quality latex toppers available anywhere. Be sure to include the optional organic cotton cover with your order.

That latex topper is extremely resilient and will wear well under heavy body weight. It’s usually comfortable enough in most fibromyalgia cases.
In some cases of severe fibromyalgia, it may become necessary to add a 2nd topper, which I recommend waiting to order until you feel it’s necessary.

That second topper isn’t nearly as resilient, but much softer. If needed, it’ll be something that will need replacing every couple of years, or so.
From PlushBeds, it’s an Alternative Down Topper.

The mattress and latex topper will last from many years under heavy body weight.
The latex topper is so resilient as to absorb much of your body weight, which will further extend the life of the mattress…costing you less in the long term.

Finally, it’s important to add an Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector.
This will prevent any perspiration and body oils from getting into the upholstery layers. The result is a long lasting, better smelling mattress.
