Hello TME,
I read Pete’s eval of Sealy & Serta.
Based on Pete’s articulations I’m very discouraged about buying a new mattress.
I am seeking a new Cal King mattress.
I live in San Diego, CA. I am 68 yrs of age 6’4”, 240Lbs. My wife is 65 yrs of age, 5’11”, 180 Lbs.
We currently have a 15 yr. old Stearns and Foster pillow top Cal King Mattress.
What do you recommend as a suitable replacement, please?
Thanks, John
Hi John,
S&F were among the best mattresses made at that time. They had been considered to be “The Cadillac of the Industry” for many decades… until they were purchased by Tempurpedic.
From 2012 through 2013, a little memory foam was included in a couple of their models.
As of January of 2014, they became nothing more than expensive junk, thanks to the switch to all memory foam in every model.
Your mattress, made in 2011, was among the last great mattresses made.
Today, all of the name brands and many of the off brands are upholstered with mostly memory foam, which is purposefully designed to need frequent replacing while avoiding the terms of the warranty.
It collapses under the combination of body weight and heat, but will return when you get out of bed.
The terms of the warranty require a sustained impression with no one on it.
That rarely happens.
It’s incredibly diabolical.
The good news is that there are mattresses made without memory foam.
You can find many of them on our website.
Among them is Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattresses.
These are superior in quality to most, which I rank up there with your old S&F.
It’s especially designed to hold up well under large people.
My wife and I, who are also large people, have been sleeping on their Ultra Plush model for more than 11 years.
It’s still in great condition.
(Due to the high quality of the upholstery materials and the much higher than usual coil count, all of their models are firmer than they sound in their description.)
That said, my recommendation for you is the same Ultra Plush model we use at home.
This mattress is too substantial to be roll packed for UPS Shipping.
It comes with White Glove Delivery, in a delivery truck with 2 men.
Delivery includes setup in your bedroom, removal of your old mattress and all packaging materials.
Between manufacturing and shipping from Canada, these mattresses can take several weeks to arrive.
Delivery is Free and there’s no sales tax.
After Pay Financing is available at checkout.
Here’s a links to the Natura of Canada complete line of mattresses, and their Greenspring Ultra Plush model.
