Equivalent to an Old Sealy Posturepedic Mattress.

Andrea writes:

Hi Pete,

I have an old Sealy Posturepedic plush pillowtop mattress and am having trouble figuring out which mattress by Sealy is equivalent. None of the names are the same and I can’t find one that feels quite right. There’s something off about the overall feel, especially when you’re trying out a floor sample for any length of time.

I just want to sleep on a cloud for an affordable price.

Can you simplify all of this?

Thanks, Andrea

Hi Andrea,

There are many variables involved between when you bought that Sealy mattress and today. My 1st piece of advice is to stop looking for something that doesn’t exist… except, maybe through Craig’s List. You’d be looking for one that had been used in a guest bedroom, which should still be good, and at a phenomenal price.

Your Sealy mattress was made by Sealy, when making a quality mattress that was designed to provide good support, comfort and longevity at an affordable price.

Sealy is no longer owned by Sealy. In fact, all of the “Name Brand” mattresses are no longer owned by the origin companies. Back then, they would compete with each other to see who made the best mattress… quality & value for your dollar.

Today, it’s all about profit. Advertising drives the customer. The product they offer, feels good initially, but wears quickly. What keeps them humming is the upholstery material they’re using.

Unlike other foams, which are only pressure sensitive, their new foam is also temperature sensitive. Besides having to deal with your body weight, this new foam also reacts to your body heat… softening as it warms.

Like I said, and as the sales hype claims, it feels great… At First.

For most people, it certainly feels good enough to make the sale.

In your case, you spent enough time trying it, and having your extremely well made mattress for comparison. Luckily you did spend that extra time on those floor samples. You didn’t know what you were feeling, but something about it didn’t feel quite right to you.

Fortunately for you, you heeded your instincts to look into it further.

It doesn’t take long for today’s customers to become dissatisfied.

This usually happens shortly after the comfort exchange period has lapsed.

Those who make it before the end of the comfort exchange period, are in for more of the same. So much time and energy wasted on this when it could have been spent more enjoyably… but, I digress.

“How do they stay in business?”, you may ask.

Here’s the diabolical part.

This foam that sags beneath you, later to the point of discomfort, returns to its original shape when you get out of bed.  Memory Foam

So, when you complain about the sagging, your warranty becomes worthless because without you lying in the bed, it’s not sagging enough to meet the criteria of the warranty.

So, it’s a good thing you asked.

Memory foam is not all that new, introduced almost 30 years ago.

However, the last quality Sealy mattress was made in 2013, along with

Stearns & Foster. Simmons and Serta followed in 2017.

Simmons was using memory foam prior to being sold. However, they cured it before installing it into the mattress, so they had no chemical off gassing.

It seemed to me to be more dense and a bit less temperature sensitive.

Mattresses that contain NO MEMORY FOAM, aren’t easy to find… especially not for the large mattress chain stores.

The other types of foams commonly used are:

Polyurethane, which what’s in your mattress. Invented in the late 1960s, a petrochemical based foam designed to feel like latex at a fraction of the price.

Latex, which has always been “The Best”. An all natural product, turning the sap of the rubber tree into a comfortable upholstery material, was discovered in the 1880s. It was, indeed, an expensive process.

Every time I had a customer who had been sleeping on a latex mattress, they wouldn’t consider anything else… regardless of price.

Latex had value… remaining like new for decades.

Today, it’s hardest to find a mattress made with polyurethane. There’s no profit in it. Latex is much more plentiful than ever, and the prices have dropped… especially since the pandemic, when the supply lines were so badly disrupted.

The major manufacturer in Sri Lanka did a great job of eliminating the middleman when he took the time to establish links with mattress manufacturers directly.

Sri Lankan Dunlop Latex is Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic.

Latex imported from China is often mixed with clay.

Using this filler makes it cheaper in every respect.

MemoForm Foam is something new in the US, but has been very popular in Europe for about 25 years. It was engineered in Italy by the Magni Family.

It produces the same feel as regular memory foam does, when new, and continues to do so for many years after.

It’s Chemical Free, and NOT Temperature Sensitive.

If you like the feel of memory foam, you’ll LOVE MemoForm Foam from Magniflex.

For you, I recommend… for the best at the lowest prices. Ecoterra, in medium.

Their mattresses are 100% Organic. The pocketed coils provide firm, contouring support for maintaining proper spinal alignment, and pure organic latex upholstery with an organic cotton cover.
