Sharp Hip Pain on a Tempurpedic Mattress.

Barry writes:

Hi Pete,

I have an adjustable queen size bed, equipped with a Tempurpedic mattress, which I began using about 4 years ago.

I'd always been given that Tempurpedic is the "gold standard" for mattresses, but that's hardly been the case for me.

But I've yet to discover anything better.

Since I am a side sleeper, I can manage only about 45 minutes per side before I am awakened with sharp hip pain and must therefore alternate sides. So goes my every night.

I've previously tried a Simmons' Beautyrest  pillowtop, and a generic memory foam mattress that came with my adjustable bed, two versions of air mattresses, (the "SAM" - Self Adjusting Mattress and one with a remote-controlled pump), and two different memory foam toppers (2.5" and 3", usedsingly as well as stacked together on my Tempupedic). None of those arrangements alleviated my eventual hip pain, which varied from annoying to intolerable.

Given my past lack of success, I'm now quite skeptical about plunking down yet another couple of thou' on another "can't-miss", "best you can get," sleeping system.

Even if you get to test them, they all seem great during the short 10-minutes that you're able to try them, but getting a full night's sleep on one has proven to be a different story. And try as I have, I can't fall asleep on my back (breathing), or my stomach (contorted neck). So sleeping for me is always an inefficient experience.

Would there be a topper that you'd recommend a 6', 229 lb male that could possibly alleviate this problem? I presume that I would need something that is extra-firm, but just how firm? I've read various discussions from people that have been given recommendations by the S.L.A.B. sales people offering custom toppers composed of differing layers of materials and firmnesses. Some have raved about the successes enjoyed with such topper "prescriptions".

So, any recommendations that work?

Or am I simply destined to wake up a half a dozen times throughout every night to switch sides?

I can't imagine what it might feel like to ever sleep an entire night through. Does that even ever happen?

Thanks for your consideration. Barry

Hi Barry,

Yes. A good night’s sleep is definitely doable, but not with what you’ve been buying.

The common thread that runs through all of your mistakes is memory foam.

You're the victim of a ruse...of sorts.

A boat load of mass media marketing and hype...and you bought into it...hook, line and sinker.

"The Gold Standard"?! Man, that's a heavy statement… and totally false.

For the past 25 years, or so, I've been amazed at how well all that advertising making you believe something that isn't so has worked.

And, you’re definitely not alone.

All it took was to tell you the same load of tripe...over, and over, and over.

A lie NEVER becomes the truth, no matter how often you tell it.

It’s only perceived as such… as you have perceived it.

If Abe were alive today, I'm sure he would include, "But it seems that you can fool almost all of the people all of the time if you spout the same lie long enough”.

The first thing that I know will help you, flip your mattress over and sleep on the under side… the not memory foam side.

You’re likely to find that side to be too firm to sleep on comfortably.

Add a 3” Soft, Organic Dunlop Latex Topper.

Latex is and has been the best upholstery material for the last 100+ years… most comfortable and longest lasting.

The organic cotton cover is optional, but recommended.
