Hip Pain on an Old Sealy Posturepedic Mattress

William writes:

Hi Pete,

I bought a Sealy Posturepedic Grass Leaf Firm Queen mattress from you in 2012.

It has been fine, but as I get older, I find my hips hurt while sleeping (I'm a side sleeper). What topper do you recommend for relief? And if I buy a new mattress, which would you recommend?

Thanks and regards, William

Good Morning William,
Thanks for remembering me.

You’d be surprised by how much the mattress industry has changed.
When you bought yours, it was hard to buy a bad mattress. Things started changing a couple of years later, when Sealy and S&F were sold to Tempurpedic. Simmons and Serta were sold a couple of years after that.

Today, you have to be a pretty savvy buyer to find a mattress worth buying.
The wide spread use of memory foam is reason for decline in quality.
Finding mattresses without memory foam isn’t something that’s easily found at almost every store.

If your mattress is still providing you with adequate support and all you need is additional comfort, then a topper is the way to go.
Which brings us to the next story in the evolution of the mattress industry.

Pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex has always been the best upholstery material. But traditionally, it had been very expensive.
Fast forward to the Covid pandemic, which badly disrupted the latex supply chain.

Post pandemic, the manufacturers of this high quality latex reached out to the US manufacturing industry. Today, many companies are selling directly to the public, which lowered the prices to the consumer.

Complicating all this is China. Chinese made latex includes clay as a filler.
Still being able to be sold as “all natural” latex, it doesn’t wear nearly as well as “pure” latex, so you have to be careful.

Here’s a link to a manufacturer who has the lowest prices on pure latex.

2” Soft or Medium should do it for you, considering the mattress you have.

3” is available for a more luxurious feel.

Be sure to opt for the organic cotton cover to go with it.

This should be enough for you to avoid needing to buy another mattress for several more years.

What I recommend for mattresses today, is also a factory direct company, which makes mattresses using the same pure latex upholstery.

Based on what you have, the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium Firm will be the best fit.

The mattresses that we sell are made in Canada and specially designed to support heavy people over the long term… more expensive than is necessary for average size people.
