We’ve Wasted Thousands on Mattresses in the Last 10 Years.

Hi Pete,

My husband is 6'2', 210 lbs. I'm 5'5', 150 lbs.

He needs a firmer mattress than I do, and we've wasted thousands of dollars and lots of sleepless nights in the last 10 years, buying mattress after mattress that we can't use.

We thought investing in the Select Comfort system would be the answer...he would have it very firm, I could go softer.

Nope. It still has the body impression problems, and my husband is in great back pain. We have tried Kingsdown, a local mattress dealer's inhouse brand, no luck.

What should we try next?

Thanks, Terri

Hi Terri,

I’m sure that it’s not much consolation to know that you’re not alone.

I hear many complaints about mattresses purchased over the last 10 years.

It’s important to understand why, so that you don’t continue wasting money.

Sealy and S&F were sold in 2013… Simmons and Serta in 2016.

All switched to using memory foam. The new owners were happy to sacrifice quality for profits, by using the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented.

Memory foam wears quickly, but the problem it causes doesn’t meet the criteria necessary for an exchange… leaving the consumer with no choice but to purchase a new mattress.

Since most of today’s mattresses are upholstered with memory foam, the problem repeats, over and over again.

The 2 brands you mentioned use memory foam.

It’s a good bet that all of the others you bought did as well.

Let’s not bypass Sleep Number without mentioning that an air bag is inadequate support for anyone’s spine, let alone someone with a preexisting back problem.

The best support for relieving chronic back pain is an individually pocketed coil, which provides firm contouring support, which maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine.

The best upholstery material is pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex… and has been for more than 100 years… most comfortable and most durable.

Your husband’s weight is low for his height.

What you both need is firm support and a comfortable sleeping surface… and longevity that prevents you from having to buy another new mattress for many years to come.
