A Mattress to Relieve Back Pain from Herniated Discs.

Lisa writes:

Hi Pete,

My husband has two herniated discs in his lower back and we are looking for a new mattress to help him sleep and relieve the pain.

We are confused with all the types of mattresses and need some help. Thanks, Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Memory foam and Pillowtops are types NOT to get.

Resist the sales pitches that would have you think of a mattress as a luxury item.

Your husband needs firm support for those discs.

You both need enough cushioning to relieve pressure points and to sleep deeply.

The key here is enough..."Just Enough" padding.

It's the padding that will wear first. More than enough means it will wear faster. When that happens, your back is no longer aligned and your husband is in pain.

Not sure as how much is enough?

Opt for something firmer than you think you like.

it's way too easy to make a mistake when buying a mattress.

If you error on the side of firm, you can always add a topper to soften the surface to your taste.

If you error on the side of soft, you're screwed.

You've wasted your money and your husband's pain will increase.

When it comes to any upholstered product, like a mattress or a sofa, the bigger you are, the harder they fall. Take your body weight into consideration when determining how strong your mattress needs to be.

It's a simple, common sense purchase...if you don't listen to the hype of the salespeople and luxury products being pushed at stores.

My top recommendation is the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress.

Opt for Medium if you’re light to average in size, Medium Firm if a bit on the heavy side.

The individually pocketed coils are firm and strong in both.

This type of coil system will maintain the natural alignment of the body and spine, which is ideal for relieving chronic back pain.

The upholstery is Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Foam, which provides long lasting comfort that won’t allow you to sink, like memory foam does. And unlike memory foam, there’s no Off gassing.

The choice of Medium or Medium Firm is in the comfort level of the latex.
