Would you know whether I should expect such heat radiation from other mattresses (ie the Simmons one I am interested in?).
It’s my first time buying a mattress in more than 20 years, so I'm very inexperienced about the attributes of current retail mattresses.

20 years ago, this was a legitimate business. 20 years ago, there wasn't any scam products, like memory foam. 20 years ago, most retailers knew their products and how they performed. 20 years ago, manufacturer's were competing for your business by trying to out-do each other with quality. 20 years ago, mattress salespeople hadn't yet sunk to the level of used car salespeople.
None of those things are commonplace today. A mattress is a blind item. You can't see inside of it. That fact is now being used against you...as opposed to the old days when the components of a mattress were shown and explained in clear terms that anyone could understand.
Today, it's all hype....buzz words that sound good but add up to only so much BS, that you could drown in it.
Today, you have to rely on you. You can't trust what you are being told. You certainly can't trust what you've been sold.
Today, you need to know what is inside that mattress you can't see into. Spec sheets are provided for each mattress made. Ask to see it. Learn what the words mean. I tell you in all sincerity, that to proceed without this knowledge is to allow yourself to be victimized to a greater degree than has already occured.
For heat issues, memory foam is to be avoided. It's the worst material ever conceived for use in a mattress. The more there is and the closer to the surface it is, the more of a problem it becomes...not just for heat, but for off gasing and durabilty as well.
Pillowtops add to the heat. But more importantly, they lose their shape much too soon....another "comfort" ploy that gets you back in the market sooner than later.
