Mattress Protector vs. Encasement.

Belinda writes:

Hi Pete,

Thank you for your blog and all the incredibly helpful information that you share.
In researching, I’ve found a lot of talk about mattress protectors and mattress encasements.
What’s the difference and how do I decide on which to use?
Thanks, Belinda

Hi Belinda,
What you use to protect your mattress needs to be waterproof.
However, you have to be careful, as many waterproof mattress protectors use a plastic backing, which will cause you to sleep hot.
And, the plastic backing breaks down with laundering.

The importance of using a waterproof mattress protector is paramount for the sake of extending the comfort life of the mattress.
The greatest enemy to your mattress is perspiration, which seeps into the upholstery layers, breaking them down and creating an odor that’s impossible to get out.
For these reasons, every mattress should have a waterproof mattress protector.

An encasement, which should also be waterproof, is 6 sided and zippers on.
This is used to keep anything that’s in your mattress from getting out, like bed bugs… usually used on an old mattress.
Even when using an encasement, you’ll also want to include a mattress protector.
The mattress protector is 5 sided, which makes it easy to get on and off for laundering purposes and eliminates the need to launder the encasement, which is a PITA to get on and off.

We carry some very nice waterproof mattress protectors and encasements.
None of which have a plastic backing.

My favorite is the one we use at home.

Hi Pete,
Thank you for that explanation.
What about dust mites?
I have a sensitivity to them.
Do I need an encasement and protector?
Thanks again, Belinda

Hi Belinda,
Dust mites are everywhere.
They collect on the surface of your mattress, as they love feeding on the skin cells your body sheds every night.
They will, eventually, make their way into the mattress if you’re not using a waterproof mattress protector.

If your mattress is new-ish, the protector is all you’ll need.
There are steps you can take to minimize their numbers from the surface of your mattress.
Launder your sheets and mattress protector more often.
And, while you have your bed stripped, vacuum the surface of your mattress.

Thanks, Pete
