Hi Barbara,
Pain originating from a disc problem in the lower back, (where a nerve is being pinched), doesn't usually stop at the hip as the problem becomes more advanced, but goes around the hip and down the leg.
It sounds like you caught it early.
Bunk bed mattresses are usually pretty hard.
At 12, her body shape has already started to change from that of a girl into that of a woman. If she sleeps on her side on a firm mattress, that would be enough to exacerbate her hip pain.
The bunk bed doesn’t need to be replaced.
