Tempurpedic, NOT a Good Mattress for a Big Man

Kayla writes:

Hello Pete,

I came across your articles regarding Temperpedic mattresses and thought maybe you could be of assistance.

My partner is a big-n-tall man (6'3; 325lbs) and I am a bit smaller (5'4;160lbs). Over the last 10 years we have been through 2 mattresses, both memory foam, and have been highly disappointed. They are costly and to only last less than 5 years is not worth the price.

My Temperpedic is now causing back issues for both of us after only 4 yrs. The previous Dream Cloud was supportive for only 3 years before trouble started. The Dream Cloud sagged so much that warranty took a percentage off on a new mattress purchase.

I am lost at which direction to go now.  Purchasing a new set, yet again, it costly. Could you offer guidance on what types of mattresses I need to look at given that memory foam is not lasting for us as designed.

Any assistance you can be would be helpful!!!
Thanks So Much, Kayla

Hi Kayla,
As you know by now, Tempurpedic makes a bad mattress, despite all their advertising to the contrary. And that goes for any memory foam mattress, regardless of brand. The only one that’s worse is Sleep Number… an air bag, offering zero support.. much like a waterbed, topped with memory foam.

I have a couple of solutions for you.
The first is temporary, lasting another couple/few years, but costing a lot less than solution #2, which is extremely long lasting.

Your mattress is topped with memory foam. Supporting the memory foam is high density polyurethane foam.
Simply flip your mattress over to the poly foam side and add a soft or medium pure latex topper for surface comfort.
The poly foam side is likely to be too firm to sleep on comfortably.

Here’s a link to “Latex for Less”. They have the lowest prices on the highest quality latex mattress toppers… pure, organic and hypoallergenic.
I recommend getting the organic cotton cover to go with it.

Be forewarned, you can find cheaper latex toppers out there.

They are imported from China, where they add fillers, which cause their products to wear very quickly. At your husband’s size, only a couple of months. As soon as you replace it once, you’ve spent more that if you had bought the one I recommended, which lasts for years.

Solution #2… a new mattress.

We specialize in a particular line of mattresses that will wear well under extreme body weight, with some of our previous customers weighing more than 500 lbs.

The Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattress in Luxury Firm for long lasting support, and a Soft or Medium Latex Topper from Latex for Less for the surface comfort you’ll need.

Here’s a link to that mattress:

This mattress is extremely durable, with one of the highest coil counts available, using heavy gauge double tempered steel.

The upholstery is natural latex.

There is NO memory foam in this or any mattress we sell.

The first thing to wear, in a mattress, is the upholstery on top that provides the surface comfort. The softer and less resistant that upholstery is, the sooner it will wear. The more pressure you place upon it, via the weights of the people using it, also plays a role in the time it takes to wear.

Which brings us to your personal dilemma of being of vastly different sizes.

Females tend to require a softer surface feel to accommodate their differences in shape, needing more give at the hip, usually.

This puts you and your husband at odds, in terms of comfort vs. durability.

When it comes to the aforementioned latex topper, it’s available in 2” or 3” and in soft, medium or firm.

You don’t want the firm, leaving you with the choice of soft or medium.

I recommend the 2” Soft for your situation, as the best balance of comfort and durability.

The advantage of using a latex topper is threefold.

The surface comfort is obvious.

Less obvious is that latex is extremely resistant, unlike memory foam, which means that the topper will absorb much of your body weights, which in turn will retard the wearing of the mattress, often doubling the life expectancy of the mattress, which in the case of the recommended mattress, is already substantial.

And lastly, when the topper does wear out, all you need to replace is the topper, which is significantly less expensive than replacing the mattress.

BTW: There’s nothing new about latex.

Pure, organic latex has been the highest quality upholstery material for the last 100+ years.

When it comes to the care and maintenance of a mattress, there are things you can do to enhance longevity… something everyone should do, but is absolutely critical for those who differ greatly in size.
