My Mattress Smells Bad. Will the Odor Ever Go Away?

Hi Pete,

I posted a question to you a few months ago about an odor in my new mattress. This bad smell didn't go away.

So I contacted the store and they made me a new mattress.

I went in to smell it and it was fine.

When they delivered it, it didnt smell.

After I had the mattress pad and sheets on for a few days, the smell came back, just as bad as the first mattress.

Will the smell ever go away completely?

Thanks, Ann

Hi Ann,

The odor is from the chemicals that gets trapped in the cells of the memory foam when it's made. With use, the cells break open and the odor is released. With continued use, the smell does eventually go away. However, those chemicals are toxic and they attack your respiratory system. It’s would have been better to avoid mattresses made with memory foam, altogether.

Strip the bed and roll around on the mattress. Sit along the entire edge. This will help break open all the cells...getting the majority of the job done all at once, instead of little by little. Do this in the morning and leave the bed stripped all day to air out. Open the windows and close your bedroom during this process.

This toxic, Chinese made, memory foam is used in many of today’s mattresses… including Tempurpedic, Sealy, Simmons, Serta and Stearns & Foster. All of the name brands that you could once trust for quality have been sold.

Memory foam is not only toxic, it wears quickly and sleeps hot.

TME specializes in mattresses with NO memory foam in them.
