What Can I Do About a Mattress That’s Too Firm?

 Jane writes:

Hi Pete,

I recently purchased a mattress set. The first one I purchased was the Simmons Beautyrest Pillowtop. It felt good, at first, but began  sinking in the middle, very badly, within a couple of weeks. So I used my one-time exchange and selected the Stearns and Foster Luxury Firm tight top. It felt wonderful in the store. The bed was delivered Saturday, and it is so hard that my back is killing me.

What do I do now?

Thanks, Jane

Hi Jane,

A new mattress should always feel firmer than the store’s floor sample. Your problem has an easy and reasonably inexpensive fix.

You can rest easy knowing that you have good support.

You’ll rest easier, giving that mattress the surface comfort you want.

Add a soft latex mattress topper, and all will be well.

Unlike your Simmons Pillowtop, which consisted of memory foam, a removable pillowtop made of latex won’t allow you to sink.

A soft latex mattress topper will create the feel of floating.

It’s extremely comfortable and equally durable.
