Hi Pete,
What is the best mattress for a really heavy couple?
My wife and I weigh about 300 lbs. each.
We’ve spent a ton of money on mattresses that sales people have sworn would wear well. I guess they’ll say anything to make a sale.
I found your blog while researching where we’ve been going wrong.
Now, I know, thanks to you.
I want a recommendation from you.
We’re looking for the best we can do, without spending a ton more money. We’re in our 30’s and have no back pain, usually.
My wife likes a softer mattress.
Thanks, José
Hi Jose,
An all latex mattress is the most durable.
You have to be careful about where that latex is made.
Much of the latex that’s processed in China has clay mixed in with it.
This reduces the cost AND the longevity.
Clay is a natural product, so it’s sold as All Natural Latex.
What it isn’t, is Pure.
Pure Latex is and has been the longest lasting upholstery material available for the last 100+ years. And for much of that time, has been extraordinarily expensive.
But now, you can buy Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Mattresses from the factory directly, who are importing their latex directly from the source, in Sri-Lanka.
Without all the middle men, the savings is extraordinary.
The manufacturer is Latex for Less.
Given your sizes and your wife’s desire for a soft mattress, my recommendation comes in 2 parts.
A firm mattress and a soft topper.
As the years go by, you’ll need to replace the topper from time to time. But, the mattress will not need to be replaced for decades.
Start with the Latex for Less 9” Mattress in Firm.
This mattress is currently on sale and comes with a 120 Night Trial Period.
Here’s the link for that mattress:

Add to that, a Latex for Less 3” Soft Pure, Organic Latex Mattress Topper.

If you need a new boxspring/foundation, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height and color.
They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed.

Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials.
Keeping your mattress clean and dry will enhance longevity.
The Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector is my recommendation…the one we use at home.
It sleeps cool and works well.
