8" vs.5" Foundation for a New Mattress?

Thank you for a very informative website/blog!
I'm mattress shopping, after sleeping for many years on a very old Serta Luxury Firm mattress.
We are long overdue for replacing this very old mattress.
In trying the store mattresses, he prefers cushier and I prefer firmer.
 
I am 5' 7" and 160 lbs. Hubby is 5' 11" and 195 lbs.
He has shoulder pain, sleeps very hot & restlessly.
I have occasional hip pain, am a side and back sleeper and tend to be cold.
 
I'm also interested in knowing of there is a comfort difference between the 8" & 5" foundation.

The 8” vs. 5” is only a height choice for the foundation.
Neither the feel nor longevity of the mattress is affected by whichever you choose.
The only thing affected is the overall height of the bed.
It's all about the ease of getting in and out of bed....and not at all about the comfort of the mattress.
