A new mattress for our 12-year-old daughter.

Hi Peter,

Hope you are well.
We bought a couple mattresses from you several years ago, which we are happy with.
We are now planning to get a new mattress for our 12-year-old daughter.  I'd love your advice.
We are getting her a new, larger bed. We're planning to get a Queen so we can also use it as a guest bed.
Right now, she has a very basic, not expensive, 'squishy' mattress.  She loves that it's soft.
I think it will likely give backaches to any adult that would sleep in that bed.
While we splurged for our own mattress, we are hoping not to spend too much for this purchase.
Is there a mattress that you recommend that is a good guest bed mattress and not too pricey?
Thank you very much, Adina
Good Morning, Adina.
Welcome back!
Young people tend to like soft.
Too soft, like too many sweets, has long term negative effects.
Left to her own devices, she’ll end up with back problems when she’s older.
So, the challenge is to get her a bed the provides the support she needs, the comfort she wants, at a price that’s as low as possible without sacrificing quality.
Let’s start with your least expensive option.
The Adrian mattress is the least expensive we carry.
It’s a firm mattress that will support her properly and do so for many years.
Shown here:

To get her the comfort she wants, the best option is a Suite Sleep 3” Soft Pure, Organic Latex Topper.
But as you’ll see, they are expensive.

The latex topper option is a long term solution.
Not so long term, and a whole lot less expensive, but also extremely comfortable is an Alternative Down Comforter, which you can pick up at Bed Bath and Beyond.
Alternative (synthetic) Down keeps its loft better than real down.
Box springs are expensive to ship, costing more than they’re worth, which is why you don’t see one listed with that mattress.
Good quality box springs can be had cheaply if you know where to get one.
Costco, Sam’s Club and Big Lots have the lowest prices for box springs and frames.
The aesthetics of a decorative Platform Beds is something she may prefer, over the look of a boxspring.
I wouldn’t use the comforter for adult guests.
The extra weight will cause it to wear quickly.
You’ll want to save that for your daughter.
Which brings me to another mattress option.
The Brolynn Old Fashioned Two Sided Mattress in Plush is a bit more expensive, but not an expensive mattress, as mattresses go.
The plushness of that mattress isn’t too plush, but should be comfortable enough for adults. It also provides a less firm base support for your daughter without sacrificing the support her spine needs as she grows.
I can’t help but feel that this is your best all-around mattress option.
