Hi Pete,
I have been reading your blog and gaining a lot of insight on our mattress search.
We have a Sleep Number Bed mattress, which we hate.
In the store, we loved the feel of the Simmons Beautyrest and Stearns & Foster mattresses.
But after reading online reviews, (including yours), we do not want a pillowtop or either of those brands.
Your recommendation of the Natura of Canada Greenspring is on our short list.
We are also considering the Brentwood Oceana, and the Avocado mattresses.
They are priced pretty comparably and I haven't been able to find a place to test these in any stores.
I was hoping you could way-in on quality of materials and construction and which might meet our needs. We are both side sleepers (5'10" 230lbs and 5'6 180lbs) and I have chronic hip and back pain.
My husband also has back pain and frequently wakes with headaches.
For 2 years we have been suffering on a sleep number bed.
We are wary of, yet again, making an expensive mistake.
We currently have a queen and are thinking of moving to a king to accommodate our kids who seem to find their way into our bed at least a couple times a week.
I am also wondering how the Greenspring Ultra Plush impacts the longevity.
Are we better of going with a latex topper on a firmer model, or if that makes any difference?
I am so appreciative of your willingness to help confused mattress shoppers find our way through the maze that the mattress industry has created!
I look forward to your words of wisdom!
Shane
Hi Shane
You can eliminate the Brentwood Oceana, which contains memory foam.
Memory foam is the worst upholstery material available...what you already have in your Sleep Number Bed.
The Avocado mattress is closer in spec to the Natura Greenspring.
The differences that will matter down the road, is the very thin gauge wire throughout the Avocado line.
With the exception of the center third, the 16 and 17 gauge wire used is extremely thin.
The Natura uses 14.5 gauge throughout and the steel is twice tempered...not just once, as with the Avocado.
The other difference is the lesser expensive Dunlop latex. Natura uses natural Talalay latex.
The pricing is about the same.
Given the weight of your husband, the Natura will keep its shape better over the years.
The Natura Greenspring has much higher quality specifications.
This is especially important for longevity under plus size people.
Of the 4 models, the Ultra Plush model is the most comfortable.
It'll hold up, just fine, over the years.
My wife and I sleep on the Greenspring Ultra Plush mattress.
Ours is more than 6 years old and still in like new condition, despite each of us weighing more than 200 lbs.
