Chronic Back Pain on a Tempur-Pedic Mattress.

Hi Pete,

Like many of your customers have said, my husband and I just returned from a vacation where we slept wonderfully on the bed there.
My husband (180lbs 5'10”) suffers from chronic lower back pain, and we have tried EVERYTHING.
He noticed immediately that he was sleeping well when we were on vacation with no pain at all.
Yet, it came back the first night home.
I don’t have any issues. I am 5’3” 135lbs and we are both side sleepers.
We believe we need something on the firm side, as we are currently sleeping on a Tempur-Pedic mattress.
What would be your recommendation for us?
Thank you so much in advance, Nickilee

Hi Nickilee,
Like so many of my customers, you’ve tried “everything” that’s been advertised.
And along with so many of my customers, you’ve leapt to conclusion that you don’t have the right degree of firmness.

You’re thinking that in order for your husband’s chronic back pain to be addressed, you’ll have to deal with a firmer mattress as a compromise…which will make you less comfortable, but you’re willing to make the sacrifice for his sake.

You’ll be happy to learn that none of that is true.
What your husband is lacking is the proper support.
An all foam mattress, especially a memory foam mattress, is the direct cause of his chronic pain not going away. That same type of support, made firmer, won’t solve his problem and will only create a discomfort problem for you.
You don’t have to take my word on this. You can see for yourselves by simply flipping the Tempurpedic mattress you have over to its firmer side.
His back pain will be less, but not go away. And you will be uncomfortable.

The degree of firmness needed is based on body weight.
He isn’t heavy enough to need a really firm mattress.
What he does need is a mattress with the right components…which your Tempurpedic does have.

Most hotels mattresses use an individually pocketed coil unit, which provides push back support against the spine that contours to the shape of the body, maintaining the natural alignment of the spine. It’s this type of support that relieved his back pain while you were vacationing.
What’s more, most hotels have long rejected using mattresses that are upholstered with memory foam, as memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing.

An individually pocketed coil mattress that’s upholstered with memory foam will soon result in his back pain returning.
Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from your body heat. Once it softens you sink into it, which will cause your spine to again become misaligned.
And, as if that’s not bad enough, memory foam off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it’s made…creating a whole new health hazard.

The kind of mattress he needs is one that has an individually pocketed coil unit and no memory foam upholstery.
The Wolf Tulah Plush Eurotop Mattress is what I’m recommending for you.
It will relieve his back pain and still be comfortable enough for a female side sleeper.
