We are looking to replace a 10 yr. old Stearns and Foster Estate pillow top mattress.
When it was new, I slept well but my husband woke up aching and stiff.
I am 71 5’1 140 lbs. and have been diagnosed with cancer and also have 80% arterial blockage in both legs. Occasionally I wake up with a sore and painful shoulder that takes weeks to go away. I am side sleeper mostly.
My husband is 68 5’ 9” 250 lbs. has hypertension, sleep apnea, piriformis syndrome and arthritic knees.
He has a hard time getting comfortable on his back because of piriformis in right hip and wakes up sore and achy.
But he needs to sleep on his back (sleep apnea), but does sleep on his side as well.
What do you recommend to replace the S&F.

10 years ago, only a few S&F mattresses had memory foam.
If your husband’s back has bothered him all along, I suspect you bought one of those few models.
Today, all are upholstered with memory foam, since Tempurpedic bought S&F in 2013.
We stopped selling S&F at that time because there were no non-memory foam options.
Memory foam is the worst upholstery material ever invented.
It is something for you to avoid when choosing your next mattress.
Given his size, I’m recommending the same mattress my wife and I sleep on at home.
We are, each, over 200 lbs., and I have a very bad back.
Our mattress is now over 5 years old and still in like new condition.
I sleep and wake without back pain.
The specifications of this mattress exceed the specifications of anything S&F had been making prior to being sold.

Due to the high quality of the components, this mattress is nowhere near as soft as it sounds.
In fact, it may become necessary to further soften your side.
We should wait until you have it to see if we need to tweak it.
Also, due the pandemic, they are taking a couple of months to ship.
If you feel you can’t wait that long, I can make a different recommendation, but it won’t be your best choice...as this one is.
Right now, you can add blocks to the head of your bed frame, to raise the head a couple/few inches, which will address your husband’s sleep apnea.
