Hi Pete,
I just read an email exchange between you and a customer from August 2-18.
She spoke of a Stearns and Foster double pillow top mattress.
After you told her they weren’t made any longer, she asked for the next best thing.
We had a double pillow-top Stearns and Foster for many years.
We had to replace it, 3 years ago, with a Brand-X because that’s what we could afford.
In the past couple of days my wife and I were talking about looking for another Stearns and Foster.
My research took me to your set of emails.
It was depressing to read your words about the industry changes. I guess our search will be for naught also.
As you stated, our Stearns and Foster was purchased with the knowledge that it was as good as we could get.
It truly was.
The double pillow top we have now is ok, probably quite good for its price.
We flip/turn it periodically to extend its life.
It’s been 2 years since your email exchange. Has anything changed in the industry that might be appealing to us?
We don’t NEED to buy something now, but if one of those older Stearns and Fosters was discovered, or if there was a suitable substitute, it would be NICE to upgrade. “Nice to have” versus “Need to have”.
Thanks, in advance for your thoughts and opinions.
Respectfully, George
Hi George,
Sadly, there has been no improvement in the overall quality of mattresses this industry has to offer.
There are bright spots...off brands that are making high quality mattresses.
Here's a link to the one my wife and I sleep on at home:
The specifications of this mattress exceed those of the old S&F mattresses, albeit one sided.
This industry's pervasive use of memory foam is the problem, and I don't expect that to change until someone prevails in a lawsuit against it. Memory foam is not, simply, a lousy product in terms of performance, it also presents a health hazard...off gassing the toxic chemicals from which it is made.
To find any old S&F mattresses that might be available, would only be found on places like Craig's List or Ebay...someone selling something that they've owned all this time.
If you can find one that has spent the years in a guest room that has gotten minimal use, you then have something worth buying...equal to finding a needle in a haystack or hen's teeth.
You might consider maximizing what you have...maximizing, both, the comfort and longevity by adding a pure, all natural latex topper...like the ones shown here:
The latex topper ships via UPS
The above mattress comes with white glove delivery, which includes set-up and removal of your mattress.
In either case, delivery is free and there's no sales tax.
Thanks, Pete
VERY IMPORTANT:
Keeping your mattress clean and dry will increase its longevity.
We recommend our Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector.
