Simmons Beautyrest Platinum Mattress and a Latex Topper?

My wife and I stayed at a hotel on a Simmons Pillowtop mattress and she loved it. 
I saw on your page the con's of getting a pillowtop mattress. 
On a similar post, you recommended a Simmons Beautyrest Platinum and a latex topper. 
We loved the feel of the pillowtop, but I am willing to go with your recommendation for something more durable. 
Does the latex topper give a similar feel? 
If its relevant, my wife is little (5'4 and 140 lbs), and I'm bigger (6'3 and 240 lbs). 
We tried a memory foam bed and didn't like it, at all.
