Replacing a 21 Year Old Mattress, Degenerative Disc Disease.

Nancy writes:

Hello Peter,
My husband and I are in search of a new mattress (king).
He is 6’1 and 165 lbs (side and back sleeper) and I am 5’3 and 112 lbs (side sleeper).
He has (DDD) degenerative disc disease that gives him problems several times a year.
I don’t have any issues that need to be addressed by the mattress.
I prefer somewhat firm mattress that you can also sink into.
Our mattress is around 21 years old!
Any recommendations?
Despite our best intentions, I expect this mattress will need to last us a long time!

Thank you, Nancy

Hi Nancy,
After 21 years, I guess that you are fully expecting that today's mattresses are made as well as they were back then.
Things have changed, dramatically, since then...and not for the better.
Most of today's mattresses are one sided and filled with memory foam.
Both of these changes have reduced the quality and longevity of mattresses, in general, and especially among the name brands.
We do, however, carry a good quality, two sided mattress, that has no memory foam.
We also carry a very high quality one sided mattress upholstered with natural latex, which is what we sleep on at home.
