Neck and Back Pain from a Too Soft Plush Beautyrest Mattress.

Jessica writes:

Hi Pete,
I really like your mattress blog and have been reading it to see what I can learn about what mattress my daughter needs.
She is 16 and has pain in the bottom of her neck, and top of her back.
The pain, we have been told, is from very loose ligaments, rapid growth in height and poor posture.
She use to sleep only on her stomach but is trying to shift to sleep on her side.
She only weighs 120 pounds and is 5'7".

She was fine on her twin mattress, but then we bought her a Queen-Size Beautyrest Plush mattress.
The first night she slept on it, she woke up with pretty significant pain. She had never woken up in pain before.
Also, It was  the first night she slept on her new IKEA queen size platform bed.

We are able to return the mattress to the place we have bought it but we are not sure what new mattress to get now..

So I have some questions for you :
1) What is your view of this mattress are?
2) What mattress should we get?
3) Is there a pillow that will help with her neck pain.

Thank you so much
Sincerely, Jessica
Hi Jessica,
She has growing pains.
The best way to minimize all that pain, is proper spinal alignment.
Insist that she stands up straight. She'll look and feel better for it.
That same spinal alignment is also a must when sleeping.

There are two things that are causing her current pain problems with this new mattress.
1) The memory foam in the mattress.
2) A plush Beautyrest uses a very thin wire coil...not providing enough support.
A body requires firm support and a comfortable sleeping surface. Her mattress is providing neither.

The first thing is to exchange the mattress you bought for a luxury firm Beautyrest....a Silver Series model is all she needs at her weight.
Like the one shown here:

Add to that, a Pure Bliss 2" Plush Natural Talalay Latex Topper
Shown here:

The firmer Beautyrest will provide her the support her spine needs.
The Latex topper will insulate her from the memory foam in the mattress and provide extraordinary surface comfort that remains like new for many years.

Then, all she'll need is very comfy pillow that will support her neck.
The best pillow for relieving persistent neck pain is the Pure Bliss Talalay Latex/Down Pillow...which will keep her hear properly aligned with her spine.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Protect and maximize your mattress investment. Use a waterproof mattress protector.

Thanks, Pete
