Hip and Back Pain on a Stearns and Foster Mattress.

Leona writes:

Hi, Pete,
As what seems to be a typical complaint, my husband and I both deal with left hip issues and pain.
My husband also deals with lower back pain and pain in his left leg (the same side as his hip challenges).
We moved into our current house in 2005. As a "treat" to ourselves, we upgraded our mattress and bed from queen to a king.
We initially purchased a luxurious pillow-top mattress that we realized was absolutely not for us.
Sparing you the details, we have changed mattresses a few times over these years, due to poor construction and failure.
At one point, we upgraded to a Stearns and Foster.
At the time, we loved that mattress, very firm. But, it failed after a few months and we needed to exchange it.
At the time, the firmest mattress to exchange it for is our current mattress, a firm Stearns and Foster.
I believe the mattress is about 7 - 8 years old.
My husband started having his pain about a year after we moved into the house.
We didn't have (and still don't) have any pain or problems with the previous mattress which serves as our guest bed.
While we do have some hip challenges due to age, we believe that the mattress is adding additional pain that is not part of the joint challenges.
My husband is a side and stomach sleeper; I am a side and back sleeper.
I am 5'7" and 130#; my husband is 6'1" and 190#. Our queen mattress is currently still in good shape - and we rotate every 6 months.
We need to determine if our mattress may be causing some of our problems and we should consider replacement again...
...or if there is something we can do to make the mattress better.
I've been doing research trying to find if there is a "best mattress" for our kind of problems.
Thus far, the websites are saying that either a memory foam mattress or latex foam mattress fits our needs best.
We have looked at a Sleep Number bed - but are hesitant as we are not sure if that is for us.
Now that I have stumbled upon your website and what appears to be direct, no-nonsense recommendations, I am reaching out to you for your advice.
Would you mind letting us know your thoughts and recommendations as we travel down this research road?
We would appreciate any help you can provide..
Thank you for your assistance, Leona

Hi Leona,
It's important to understand what you need and why.
When your discs aren't worn, you can sleep just about anywhere without pain.
When your discs are worn, as your husband's must be, it becomes extremely important to sleep in such a manner as to maintain the natural alignment of the spine...so that the vertebrae do not pinch the nerves that are causing his sciatica pain in the hip and leg.
Not only does the mattress you buy need to do that job, you will also need it to continue to do that job night after night, year after year.
The problem you've been facing is that the quality of the materials inside most of today's mattresses is designed to wane in a relatively short period of time.

If you give any credence to the notion that there exists, in this country, a good measure of corporate greed, then believe me when I tell you,  it has a grip on the mattress industry.
Memory foam is toxic material that does a great job of seducing your senses in the showroom, and an even better job of assaulting them once you have it in your home.
Not only does it not perform in accordance to the hype given it, memory foam off-gasses the toxic chemicals from which it's made...making is a health hazard for every living being in your home....literally, adding insult to injury.

"If it's so bad, why does the industry use so much of it?", you may very well be asking yourself.
Nobody cares that it's bad for you. The one thing that everyone does care about, is profit...and, thanks to memory foam, the mattress industry is experiencing a boon like at no other time in its history....and has been for the last decade, or so.

The last 15 Years:...at a time of recession for most in this country, the mattress industry has been racking in the profits...kinda like the banking, oil & gas, pharmaceutical, weapons, prison, and political industries...but you wouldn't want to hear me getting started on all of that.

Memory foam does two things, the "dream come true" two things...as far as the mattress industry is concerned.
Memory foam "Makes the Sale"...and rarely leaves a sustained impressions that are deep enough for the consumer to prevail in a warranty claim.
Memory foam is cheaply made junk that is sold for a lot of money and almost never has to be replaced at the store's or manufacturer's expense...
...only at the consumer's expense.
This is why, what has happened to you thus far, has happened...and so frequently.
Going out to the stores to replace one bad mattress after another, is what you've been doing.

The solution I have for you, is for the Simmons Beautyrest World Class Platinum Gibson Grove Mattress in Luxury Firm.
The importance of this mattress is the pre-compressed, individually pocketed coil system.
This will provide the firm, contouring, upward support needed to maintain the natural alignment of your spine.
You will add to that, an EverEden Pure, All Natural 2" Soft Talalay Latex Mattress Topper....in lieu of a pillowtop for surface comfort.

Latex is the antithesis of memory foam. It does everything that memory foam promises and falls short in delivering.
Latex foam does all those things, does them better and does them for many years.
My wife and I have been using that very same latex topper at home, for about 6 years now, and it's still in like new condition.
Latex is all natural. No chemicals, no fillers, no synthetics are used and is carries the oeko-tex certification for purity.
It's safe enough to ingest...but not very tasty.
First discovered in the 1880's, it was first used as a mattress in the 1920s.
For nearly 100 years, all natural latex foam has been thee very best upholstery material on the planet...best in comfort and best in longevity.
All this in opposition to memory foam, which over the last 15 years, since it was first introduced, has proven itself to be thee absolute worst upholstery material ever invented for use in or as a mattress.

The mattress I'm recommending to you does have memory foam in it. It is not quite the same as most others.
Simmons has used many different names for it, but I like the original name best for descriptive purposes... Next Generation Memory Foam, (NxG).
It is less temperature sensitive and more resilient than regular memory foam.
And, it's cured before going into the mattress. Curing the foam, eliminated the off gassing of the toxic chemicals from which it's made.
THIS, in contrast to the other name brands that do not cure their memory foam.

We've all seen the commercials for memory foam, where someone presses a hand into the foam, then removes the hand to reveal a lingering hand imprint that slowly disappears.
When you press your hand into the "NxG" foam, the foam returns immediately when the hand is removed.
The major importance of the Simmons Beautyrest is the support you receive from their firm models.

The 2" soft Talalay Latex Topper will do a number of things....provide a comfortable sleeping surface that will relieve your pressure points, relax your muscles and ease your blood flow for a more restful night's sleep with less movement.
And, due to its extraordinary resiliency, the latex will absorb much of your body weight...leaving less work for the mattress and the lesser quality upholstery materials inside. The result?...A mattress that remains like new and last far longer than the mattress industry was hoping.

On both items, delivery is free and there's no sales tax.
The latex topper arrives UPS.
The mattress comes with a white glove delivery service...brought in to the bedroom, set-up, with all of the packaging material and the old mattress removed from the premises.
It only take approx. 2 weeks to get mattress that is freshly made at the factory to fill your order.
All of this, adds up to "true value". It simply doesn't get any better than this.
And, all of this is something that is, simply, nearly impossible to find in any mattress store or mattress department in the good old USA.
Here are the links to each of those recommended products.

Thanks, Pete
