The best way to approach this, is to avoid memory foam.
And, any thing that says "Gel" is because there's memory foam in the mattress.
You mentioned wanting a two sided mattress.

I'd be willing to bet that you've never heard of the Wolf Mattress Company.
I hadn't, either, up until a few years ago....despite the fact they have been making mattresses since 1873.
In fact, they are the oldest mattress manufacturer in the country, that has been continually owned by the same family.
Wolf is the name of the owner, even today.
Anyway, they make a very high quality product...two sided...a good strong coil unit...natural plant based polyurethane upholstery....NO Memory Foam.
There are three models showing...all firm to varying degrees.
The firmest is the Tulah Firm...which is down right hard.
Next, would be the Tulah Luxury Firm...firm, but not stiff and hard like the first.
This is the one I would recommend for you.
This model has individually pocketed coils...like Simmons has.
The coils are made of tempered steel. Unlike Simmons, where the steel is raw and not tempered.
Tempering steel makes it more resilient and longer lasting.
Let your doctor know that this type of support is far better for disc related back problems than the displacement support of an air mattress.
