Hi Pete,
I am currently sleeping on a Simmons Beautyrest pillow top mattress, which was very comfortable for the last 2 years.
But, it has started to produce low back and hip pain over the last 2 months, which is definitely related to sleeping as it resolves itself once I get up and move around.
It reoccurs when I go to bed each night. I am comparing memory foam and latex foams.
I have never slept well on a firm mattress and had previously always had foam mattresses positioned on a slatted base of a platform bed.
If I decide on a latex mattress could it be positioned directly on the slatted platform base or would you suggest a box spring.
I know that Tempurpedic recommends there wood foundation. I never used any foundation with my previous foam mattresses but I am unsure what type of foam I purchased in the past.
Thanks for your help. David
Hi David,
Latex is, by far, superior to memory foam. In fact, latex natural foam rubber is has been the best upholstery material available for the last 100 years.
Memory foam has been on the market for 20 years. And in that time, has proven itself to be the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented.
That said, your low back pain makes me wonder about what it is you really do need...as an all foam mattress, even latex, doesn't provide the push back support needed for disc related back pain.
Here is something for you to read, so that you can be sure that what you're buying is right for you.

Also, memory foam is comprised of 61 different chemicals. Some, of which, are toxic. Memory foam off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it's made, creating a health hazard.
Not to mention that memory foam is specifically designed to need frequent replacing. It's just a lousy product, contrary to what the Tempurpedic people have to say about it.
Memory foam is to be avoided, if you wish to make a successful long term purchase.
I have lots of my own disc related back problems. My wife and I are large people, (about 225 lbs each).

These mattresses use a twice tempered steel, pre-compressed, individually pocketed coil...with a very high coil count.
The pocketed coils move independently from one another, which contour to your body shape and maintain the natural alignment of your spine.
The upholstery is natural talalay latex.
We've sold many, and everyone who has one loves it.
The choice between the matching foundation and a platform bed, is a personal choice based on aesthetics.
In terms of support, it doesn't matter which you choose.
