Getting Back Pain from a Sealy Pillowtop Mattress.

Leigh writes:

Hi Pete,
I recently purchased two Sealy pillowtop mattress sets at Macy's in Florida that I will be returning them after sleeping on for less than 30 Days.
I told the salesman I had had back surgery five years ago and needed recommendations.
These mattresses are already sinking in. I weigh only 130 lbs!!!!
I had purchased the 2nd set for my guest room so I moved to that room to compare...Same issue!!!
He now recommends I try a plush Simmons Beautyrest being the Platinum series
Do you recommend these or can you make any other recommendations?
From the input you have said in other responses it seems to me that I should be looking for no pillow top
Do you recommend innersprings?
I can not afford to go into the latex all foam mattresses.
I have to make this exchange in the next 30 days and do not want to make another mistake
Any advice would be appreciated
Thank you, Leigh

Hi Leigh,
Your first and most damaging mistake was to tell your salesman about your back surgery.
This is information you share with people who know what to do about it.
Most of today's mattress salespeople know very little about the products they sell, let alone about how to match one up to any physical ailment.
You told him and then assumed he'd know what mattress was best for you.
Salespeople are trained to appear knowledgeable, without having the knowledge worthy of the kind of trust you displayed.
"Making the Sale" is the extent of the training given to most of today's salespeople..."THAT", and nothing else.
It would be better to know what you want and need before you go shopping. You can research anything on-line.
And if you do that, you'll find a "Plush Beautyrest" to be among the worst.

It's clear that your back will require some degree of firm support.
As a female side sleeper, you also need some cushioning to relieve the pressure at the hip.
What good is a cushy mattress when that padding compresses so quickly and easily?...as yours has.
Start with stronger mattress and add a layer of soft latex, which will not compress.
Latex is the highest quality upholstery material available anywhere on the planet. There is no substitute for quality.
And when you have a sensitive back, the sleep system you choose has to feel, years from now, as it did when it was new.

Buy the Simmons Beautyrest Platinum, but in a luxury firm...not plush...and without a pillowtop.
Add to that, an EverEden 2" Soft Talalay Latex Topper...shown here:
