DDD Pain Made Worse by Using a Tempurpedic Memory Foam Mattress.

Hi Pete,
I'm 37 and was recently diagnosed with DDD. I'm 6'1 & 190 lbs. I'm a fitness enthusiast. I expedited my DDD by jumping around doing various types of exercises.  
I have a Tempurpedic mattress and this thing only makes it worse. Some days I can barely roll out of bed! 
I can't imagine living for 40 more years (hopefully) being in this much pain every morning. I fear I'm going to end up a drug addict because some days it's almost unbearable.  
I read on your blog that pillow top mattresses & memory foam mattresses, like Tempurpedic, are not good for DDD, in fact they make them WORSE! (Great. Wish I knew that $4000 ago). 
I saw you posted a link to a Simmons mattress that is really good for DDD. I went to a mattress store, and that model has been discontinued. 
The sales clerk recommended a mattress brand I had never heard of before and it was about $1200. 
I believe the mattress company is based somewhere in Europe....England, I believe. 
It felt pretty firm, but I just wanted to ask you, what is the latest & greatest mattress right now for DDD?

Hi Chris,
It will be helpful to you to understand the problem with your back. Your discs are degenerating and if they worsen, they will herniate. 
To slow the herniating process, the discs need to be held in place. To do this, the mattress must push against your back. 
Memory foam, a slow recovery foam, does not push back against you. It softens as it warms from your body's heat and molds to you. 
In short, it's absolutely worthless when it comes to providing the "push back" support that is needed by anyone with a disc related back problem.
The very first thing you should do is flip that Tempurpedic over. The harmful memory foam is on top. 
Firmer poly foam supports the memory foam, which you will experience once you flip the mattress over and use the underside. Poly foam is not temperature sensitive. 
And while not terribly long lasting, it should provide you some relief for a while. 
Many Tempurpedic customers have turned to me for a solution, trying to salvage something from the thousands of dollars they spent on their useless mattress. 
In many cases, they have added a latex topper to the underside of their Tempurpedics and have been able to sleep comfortably for about 5 more years. 
But once the poly foam breaks down, it's totally shot.
Once you flip the mattress over and sleep on it for a night or two, you'll be able to determine what degree of firmness or softness you will need the latex topper to be.

All Natural Latex, btw, is the highest quality material available and has been for about 100 years...nothing new.
If opting for a new mattress, you should start off with one that is firm. Add the appropriate latex topper for comfort and your mattress will retain its support and comfort for many years.
Keep in mind that the poly and memory foam that are commonly used in most mattresses will lose their shape and resiliency. 
The latex topper will prevent this from occurring and provide you with a mattress that will last a lot longer than it would normally.
