A good mattress for sciatica and herniated discs under a large man.

Hi Pete,
I'm a large man, 5'8", 230 lbs, and both a back and side sleeper. I hurt my back 2 years ago and have pain from a herniated disc at L5/S1. 
I've also been dealing with pain from Sciatica for a little over a year now. I've gotten some relief by placing a stiff board under my side of the mattress, but feel we could do even better. 
We'd like to get a new king or queen size mattress and want to get one that would most beneficial for my back and sciatica pain. 
What type/brand of mattresses (and/or pad) would you suggest and what should I avoid.

Hi Joe,
The best way to relieve yourself of as much pain as possible, is to keep your spine properly aligned. 
The sciatica comes from a pinched nerve at the base of your spine. Unpinch that nerve and the sciatica goes away. 
Unfortunately, nothing will make the herniated discs heal...but keeping them properly supported and aligned will help. 
Extra Strength Excedrin will do the rest. (Ask your doctor before taking any OTC medication)...but it works well for me.

The mattress needs to be reasonably firm and it needs to stay that way as long as possible. A mattress begins to wear as soon as you start using it. 
The "wrong" bed, more times than not, is the one the salespeople try to push.
The things that are at the top of the list of things that cause a mattress to wear more quickly are: Memory foam and Pillowtops. Avoid them as you would the plague.

We are of similar size, and I have lots of disc related back problems.
The best mattress, I've found, is the one we are currently sleeping on.
