A Mattress and Latex Topper for a Man with Sciatica Nerve Pain.

Good afternoon,
I am hoping you'd be able to guide my husband and I in the right direction.
Unfortunately he has been suffering from unbearable sciatica nerve pain for approximately a year now. He has been to an acupuncturist with no relief.  
Recently he consulted one of NYC's top ortho surgeons who ordered an MRI and was told he has degeneration in his discs, L4-L5.
This is pinching his nerve causing the pain that runs all the way down his left leg and sometimes shoots all the way up to his neck.  
He is a very active and athletic person so this injury has him extremely frustrated.  He gets no more than 3-4 hours of sleep, 5 on a good night with medication.  
We currently sleep on a plush Simmons Beautyrest with a pillow top.  The mattress is just a couple of years old and definitely on the softer side because I find it more comfortable.  
However, now with my husbands back pain, we really need to find a solution that will allow us to compromise.  
I am 5 feet tall weighing 125 lbs and am a stomach and side sleeper.  My husband is 5'8" and weighs 165 lbs and is a back and side sleeper.  
I've read some of your blogs related to sciatic pain and see favorable comments regarding the latex toppers.  
I would like to flip our mattress (and have the side w/o the pillow top facing up) and place a topper to see if it'll help curb my husbands pain.  
I just don't know which would be the best fit for our current situation.  
Along with this, I am also hoping you could recommend a mattress that would eventually suit both of our needs.  
We are looking to invest perhaps within in the next year or so and are hoping to make a wise decision.

Hi Jess,
The key to alleviating sciatica is in maintaining your body's natural alignment. Just as you are properly aligned when standing erect, so should you be when lying down.
No other innerspring mattress does that better than the Simmons Beautyrest.
However, Simmons "plush" Beautyrests use a much thinner gauge wire for the coils than the firmer models. The plush models create too great a depth of softness. 
Add a pillowtop to that, and the mattress is simply too soft...inside and at the surface.

Your idea of getting a latex topper for the underside of the mattress is something you would have seen me suggest numerous times. 
In all of those cases, the underside of the mattress is firm. In your case, the underside, while firmer than the top, still has softer coils. 
There is a sheet of polyethylene at the bottom, which will help stiffen that surface...and given your light body weights you may get away with it. 
You have nothing to lose by trying that, as you will need the topper anyway, on the surface of a new mattress, should it come to that.
I can't help but feel that even the underside of your plush Beautyrest won't provide support that is firm enough for him.
The best way to know, is in the trying. Flip your mattress tonight. If the underside isn't firm enough, then you need a new mattress.
