Hi Lee,
I'm not a fan of any mattress that doesn't provide adequate spinal support. For that, you need something pushing back against you.
An air mattresses relies on displacement and provides no support that pushes back up against your spine. You may as well be sleeping in a hammock.
Your problem is further aggravated by the layer of memory foam that it just under the quilted cover.
Memory foam collapses as it warms from your body heat. Based on disc problems and surgery, you couldn't have chosen a worst mattress...although there are many bad ones out there.
A mattress with a pre-compressed, individually pocketed coil unit...and one with no memory foam in it, would be your best choice.
The best of them is from Natura of Canada. Their Greenspring line provides the support your spine needs.
And, the comfort of the latex upholstery is both, extremely comfortable and equally long lasting.
We sleep on one of these at home. I have lots of disc problems, as well. I sleep and wake with no pain and fully rested.
There are 5 models in the line. The most comfortable of them is the Plush Eurotop.
