Simmons Beautyrest Black Desiree with a Soft Latex Mattress Topper.

My husband actually fell asleep on the Simmons Beautyrest Black Desiree luxury firm in the store, while I found it too soft and preferred the Calista extra firm.
Would it make sense to get the Calista and get a 3" soft Talalay latex topper for his side of the bed and a 3" medium or hard Talalay latex topper for my side? 
Would the mattress pad snug the two halves together so that we wouldn't feel the dividing line? 
I'm afraid if we get the Desiree it will never be hard enough for me. We also tried the Desiree luxury plush, which seemed to me to be even softer.

Hi Nancy,
Since we are talking about degrees of comfort, you should keep in mind the age of the floor samples you tried.
After a while, the floor samples get broken in and then broken down. They see far more hard use than you would give them at home. 
What will be delivered to you, a new freshly made mattress, will be noticeably firmer.
Your thought is the correct way to think about this. Whatever you choose will soften over time. 
When there is a difference of opinion as to which to get, it's important to get the firmer and then soften the surface with a latex topper. 
However, 3" is often too much...too great a depth of softness. 
I would suggest the 2" Soft Talalay, which is the most popular, does a great job and is what we use at home. 2" is really, all you need to add to the Calista for both of you to be happy.
It won't be too soft, as the mattress is providing the firm support. All you're softening, with the topper, is just the surface.
